walk into the waves of life

This planetary movement has a strong effect on how oceans move.

walk into the waves of life

Though it appears we live on a stable and stationary planet, we are, in fact, whipping through space around the Sun in an orbit and spinning on an axis. It also requires a shift in perspective to encompass the movement of planets, the Moon, and the Sun. Ocean motion is influenced by occurrences here on Earth that are familiar, like heat changes and wind. Friction, drag, and density all come into play when describing the nature of a wave, the movement of a current, or the ebb of a tide. Ocean movement is created by the governing principles of physics and chemistry. Water is propelled around the globe in sweeping currents, waves transfer energy across entire ocean basins, and tides reliably flood and ebb every single day. But this is far from the truth-the ocean is constantly in motion. In order to be prepared for the strong and unpredictable waves and unstable footing at your personal beach of life, you will need to constitute and declare your own personal stance.Looking toward the sea from land, it may appear that the ocean is a stagnant place. In order to remain competent in addressing my concerns, I will maintain a focus on, and remain open to, lifelong learning. I will be a lifelong learner – focused on developing new competencies to take care of my concerns.

Theįoundation of my professional life is based on keeping my family concerns front and center. Important to me to keep the care of my family as my primary focus. My career will be a harmonious contribution to my family. Protecting and preserving my dignity and the dignity of others demonstrates my commitment to engendering interpersonal trust. I consider this my most important stance because it permeates all aspects of my life, personally and professionally. As an illustration, I include my personal philosophical stance: My actions will always reflect my dignity and the dignity of others. What are the major components of such a stance? Clearly they are individual and personal declarations that provide a strong foundation for benchmarking our life decisions. To be fulfilled and stable during the shifting sands of today, waiting for the next wave of challenges to hit us, we must constitute and declare our irrevocable beliefs. Every day we face the waves of life, and need to focus on our stance. The philosophical components constitute the foundation of the student’s character – honor, loyalty, justice, obligation and courage. The physical components include keeping the front leg bent, as a shock absorber the back leg straight, to provide stability and the torso facing forward to “square” the shoulders. For students of the Martial Arts there are both physical and philosophical components. The question then becomes: How does this “wisdom of the wave” help us become more balanced and stable in our work? In our life? The answer lies in the stability of our stance once a challenge arrives. Just as we think we have a stable stance and sure footing, another more challenging wave comes from a different direction and knocks us off our feet.

The repetitive, variable, unpredictable, and powerful waves of “resistance,” coupled with the unstable footing of retreating sand produced by the “current of life,” makes maintaining stability quite challenging in our day-to-day existence. It is a matter of learning to endure the challenges that life inevitably presents – those that come from behind. These learned Black Belts tasted quite a bit of salt and sand as they “fumbled and tumbled” at the seashore! The lesson at the beach is more than maintaining a strong physical stance in order to endure the crashing waves and retreating sand. Once they all became somewhat accustomed to the challenge of maintaining some semblance of stability, I asked each of them to turn around and receive the waves from behind, an entirely different experience where they could not anticipate the timing, intensity or subtle direction each wave presented. Although redundant, the waves varied in direction and intensity, challenging the foundation and inherent stability of the students’ stances. With each command, they advanced into the ocean performing basic blocks and kicks as the waves slammed into their bodies and the sand retreated beneath their feet. I lined up all the Black Belt students on the shoreline and led them, in unison, into the breaking waves. As in the ancient tradition, the power of nature became the students’ metaphorical lesson. At a recent Black Belt retreat on the beaches of San Diego, California, I introduced the power of environmental training to Black Belt students of our school.
